Today, I was at a party where I ate bowl of disgusting snacks because I didn't want to drink on an empty stomach. I spent the next twelve hours trying to prevent the world from collapsing into millions of demonic shards, cause apparently that's what a large dose of magic mushrooms does. FML

Today, my boyfriend of six years broke up with me for a girl he's known for less than 72 hours. Why? He wanted someone pure. I lost my virginity to him five years ago. FML

Today, I wore my cool new shirt with an oriental character on it to class. The Chinese TA burst into laughter and told me the shirt read, "I am a sad, pathetic person." FML

I see a 'sack' which appeared to contain a liquid. Being the curious type, I cut open the sack, spraying said liquid over me and my desk. My teacher, after giggling, informed me that the liquid was in fact urine. I was pissed on by a dead pig. FML

Today, my girlfriend sent me a naked picture of herself and I wish she hadn't. FML

Today, I had gotten home from dropping my boyfriend off when my dad said "your phones been buzzing". I had a text saying "you're grounded," from my Dad. My Alarm saying 'Birth Control Pill' had been going off for a half hour while I was gone. FML

Today, at my sister's engagement party, my cousins thought it would be funny to get my nanna drunk. They regretted it when she told them, and everyone else at the party about her sex life and how she fakes orgasms with my grandpa. FML

Today, my 5 year old lactose intolerant daughter decided to have some chocolate. The result: me cleaning the bathroom walls at 3am, finishing at 4:30am, and then start cleaning again at 5am when her stomach contents decided I had missed a spot. FML

Today, I thought my online boyfriend was calling me, so the first line I said was "Hey, Baby." His wife answered with, "This is Jenny. Who's this?" After speaking for thirty minutes, I found out he's married, fifty-eight, and has two kids. I'm seventeen. FML

Today, I found out I will not be getting my class ring. The jeweler has a policy against doing engravings that contain "obscene or offensive language or phrases". What obscene phrase did I want? My initials and year. W.T.F.2010. FML
Today, I found out that if you lose contact with people in your previous school, they decide to spread rumors about you and make everyone believe that you're dead. FML

Today, I was baking cookies and opened the oven door to check on them. Apparently, wearing a gold necklace means the wave of heat will burn your very fair skin. I now have a bright red ring of stars around my neck. FML

Today, I discovered that my boss listens to the things we say about him on the audio-enabled cameras at our work. I'm thus currently jobless. FML

Today, I was at a zoo with some friends in Germany. People were talking to this bird and it responded in complete, grammatically correct German sentences. One of my friends said 'Wow, that bird has better grammar than the exchange student!' A bird speaks better German than me. FML

Today, my boss called me into her office to tell me I needed to mind my own business and not question everything my newest co-worker does. Yesterday, I stopped the new girl from giving $6,000 to the wrong person. I was fired on the spot. The new girl was promoted into my job. FML

Today, I arrived in Austria. Within about an hour, I realized that I couldn't understand any "German". Turns out they have a totally different dialect here to anything I was taught in school. I'm here till May. FML

Today, I woke up after a night out at the bar, immediately remembering that I had lost my cell phone, my ID and somehow spent $100. Feeling like shit already, my friend then goes on to tell me that I flashed the entire bar, and ran around the hotel naked. FML

Today, my friend called me freaking out because of an online pregnancy test. She was scared because she had no idea that she was pregnant, let alone having a fifteen pound baby. The website is a joke. She goes to an Ivy League school, and I couldn't even get into community college. FML

Today, I learned explosive diarrhea is real. I felt it coming and dashed into our supermarket. 10 feet in, liquid poo started spewing down my pants legs. 150 feet to go. I ran. It ran. They watched. After 15 minutes of cleaning, I slunk out. Now, I have to find a new market, maybe a new town. FML

Today, I was outside, peeing on a cactus. Then all of a sudden my dog jumped on my back, knocking me into the cactus. FML

Today, I was working at a children's play centre, and my stomach was twisting and turning. Thinking no one was around, I let out a small fart, only to turn and see a little girl running to her mom yelling, "Mommy-mommy that lady just farted and it sounded like daddy!" FML

As many of you know I have been doing this blog since 2005 (which in blog terms is practically the stone age) and even before then I had sharpened my belief system into a libertarian-conservative view (only difference was back then I was pro-choice, I have since switched positions due to more in depth research of the abortion movement/planned parenthood/Margaret Sanger) but the man who really helped me in my development was Michael Savage. He said what I was thinking but was too scared to say and millions of people too. I used to listen to him religiously on am1280 when he was on nightly 8-11pm. He has since been bumped for Mark Levin (I have no idea why) and is relegated to the graveyard slot (2-5am) on the station. But I digress, this is his message today that is catching fire and I really hope Newt would do this, for the good of the party, but he won't. If he does though I would be forever grateful as an activist and throw my full support behind Romney, unless Santorum upsets him in Iowa. Here's Savage's message from earlier today...

Today, I used the same credit card to apply to college and pay for a rave ticket. My card went through on the rave ticket but denied the college application fee. I guess my credit card is trying to tell me something about my future. FML

Today, my girlfriend decided we are ready for the next step in our relationship. Apparently that next step is her taking a dump with the door open. FML

Today, I was the only employee at a video store where I work when it got robbed. After crying, shaking and spending two hours and dealing with the police, my boss called and told me it was good experience and I would know what to do next time, then made me finish my shift, the night shift, alone. FML

Today, I was in class. I am an older student going back for my PhD. I was kicked out of class for "sassing" my instructor for telling him he was wrong about what took place at an event I was actually present at. My instructor is a 22 year old TA. FML

Today, I wore a fake diamond ring on my left ring finger to my college class, so that people that I barely talk to would actually think that I have a love life, instead of just being "that anti-social girl that sits in the back." FML

Today, after having paid to download an iPhone FML app, I found out that the real 'Fmylife Official' app was a lot more complete. And free. FML

Today, I found out that my friends were convinced that I was gay. I have known most of them for 3 plus years, they all thought my girlfriend was a special shopping partner. I found this out while announcing my engagement. FML

Today, I finished a 50 page term end thesis essay on the history of Russia. Looking over the final requirements once more, I find I made just a tiny little mistake. It was supposed to be a thesis on "Prussia". The paper's due tomorrow. FML

Today, we had my school musical. The girls have to wear long skirts. I had a thong on, and while we were dancing the guy behind me stepped on my skirt. It fell to my ankles... the whole audience saw my ass. FML

Today, I gave a speech at a charity event in part to help with my shyness. Nobody told me I was standing on top of an air vent. It went on. My skirt flew up, revealing my underwear to 90 people. Nobody remembers the content of my speech. FML

Today, I found out my diet and exercise plan wasn't nearly as effective when it comes to weight loss as I had originally thought. It turns out what really accounts for all the weight I've been losing is tape worms. FML

Today, my mom told me that I am going to end up getting myself pregnant. I am 21 and a virgin. She continued to yell at me and call me a liar all night. I don't know which is worse, being a 21 year old virgin or my mother accusing me of lying about it. FML

Today, I finally got a hold of my husband who I haven't actually talked to in 2 and 1/2 weeks since he is deployed and it's hard to chat. He told me he couldn't talk because he was in an epic battle, in Call of Duty. FML

Today, my boyfriend of 6 months called me. He said his mom was making him choose between having a dog or having a girlfriend. I asked him which one he picked. He was quiet, I heard barking in the background. FML

Today, our midterm exams were returned in my urban politics class. I had studied hard and scored 86%. The blonde girl next to me got a 92. Earlier in the semester she had asked me what state Detroit was in. FML

Today, I'm travelling to England for an important meeting. I'm Norwegian, and my name is Bård. I have to introduce myself as bored the whole day, because that's how my name is pronounced. FML

Today, I met a girl who's the whole package: brains, beauty, shared interests, great personality, single, and into me. Too bad I married my bitchy, depressive high school girlfriend who said she'd kill herself if I didn't.Sometimes, she still tells me she'll do it if we divorce. I believe her. FML

Today, I was in a meeting at work. In the middle of our CEO's speech, I farted. Everyone heard including my boss, who looked over and said, "Do you have anything else you wanted to add?" FML

Today, I was on Tiger TV, our high school's monthly TV program which was shown at lunch today. I was being interviewed and at one point the reporter made me laugh. I have a goose laugh so everyone in the lunch room started laughing. Then they played it in slow motion. Twice. FML

Today, I listened to a woman take an extremely fragrant crap while I waited for my pregnacy test result in the Target bathroom. FML

Today, I went to Victoria's Secret to get sized. I put the card that says my size in my pocket, then went to the movies with my boyfriend. When the person at the counter asked me to hand them my ticket, I reached into my pocket and handed it to them. It wasn't the ticket. It was my bra size. FML

Today, I was at my 10 year high school reunion. I saw the girl I used to have a BIG crush on, so I decided to go over and say hi. She screams when she sees me. Then, she starts hitting me, looking panicked. I control her and ask why she's hitting me. She says 'Everyone thought you were dead!' FML

Today, I got in an elevator at a hotel. Just as the door was closing, somebody banged into the door and stuck their hand through. I yelled, "What, are you retarded?!" The doors then opened to reveal a mentally handicapped boy with his parents standing behind him. FML

Today, I found out where my $300 worth of American Eagle and Hollister clothes had disappeared to. My 16 year old sister shredded them with scissors, took pictures of it for her Myspace and said that I deserved it for being a "conformist." All her "internet friends" said it was awesome. FML

Today, I found out my college friends are going to attack me after Christmas and attempt to tickle me to death. All because they know that I hate to be tickled. They are also going to make a Facebook group dedicated to the matter so random people can join in if they wish. FML

Today, my boyfriend got rejected by his dream college. In an effort to comfort him, I told him that he is incredibly smart and that it's their loss. He replied, "Of course you think so, you're an idiot!" FML

Today, I have an Urinary Tract Infection, causing me to have to use the bathroom about every ten minutes. I'm also about to leave on a 15 hour car trip with my entire family. FML

Tim Tebow, an enigma for football fans...

I honestly never thought I was going to have to write this, Tim Tebow has earned my respect. After watching him manage (key word manage, not dominate) the football game tonight against the Jets I have come to realize that in the immortal words of Buddy Ryan referring to Randal Cunningham, "All he does is win football games". Tebow had 1, 1! completion in the second half and only 6 or 7 the entire game. But when the game was on the line he got out of a max blitz package and outran the no doubt tired defense for a TD which got them the win.

Conventional wisdom says you cannot run a triple option/speed option package in the NFL because the athletes are too fast and athletic, conventional wisdom says a run first QB in the NFL has no chance because defenses would just be able to key off on him, conventional wisdom says you need to complete AT LEAST 55% of your passes to be an average, or even just a starting QB in the NFL (over his last 5 games Tebow has a 45% completion percentage), Tim Tebow just took a metaphorical dump on conventional wisdom tonight and I am just as stunned as anyone. I spent part of the game outright laughing at the way Denver was playing, but they won, and in sports that's all that matters.

This could forever change the NFL, like the Wildcat if NFL teams can figure out how to run the triple option/speed option (memo to Leslie Frazier, get on this NOW!!!!) the game will be revolutionized as dramatically as it was by the spread.

Tim Tebow is never going to be an MVP, he is never going to complete 60% of his passes throughout a season, he is never going to be pretty to watch (unless you are female and like the way he looks) but goddamn it the kid can win and in the NFL that's all that matters, and he'll probably get a ring or 2 before his career is over. All he has to do is manage the game, just like Brad Johnson did in 2002 and Trent Dilfer did in 2000. Many a great QB's have come through the league and never got what those 2 guys got. And let me tell you, the greats, like Warren Moon, Dan Fouts, and Dan Marino would trade all their records if they could get that ring.

Today, I was falling asleep on my desk, my head on my fist. My elbow slipped off the edge of the desk and I punched myself, leaving a fist mark on my cheek. At school, people think my parents hit me. My parents think I'm getting bullied at school. No one believes the actual story. FML

Today, I had just finished writing an essay for English. I was proud of it and thought it was one of my best works. I decided to show it to my mom, who is an English major. She read it, turned to me and said, "You know, if you actually want to go to UCLA, you're going to need to actually try." FML

Today, we got our results for our final grade English paper on which I worked my butt off on, and also which I let my best-friend copy off from. I received a E- and two detentions for plagiarism. My friend got a A minus. All she said was "oh well, at least you tried your best". FML

Today, I was turned down for a job as a cashier at Best Buy. I worked like hell to get into and then graduate from one of the top Telecommunication schools in the country. I spent all my time with extracurriculars to help my resume instead of partying like my friends. I can't even be a cashier. FML

Today, I attended a focus group. Since I've been unemployed for a month now I thought the $60 would come in handy. By the time I finished someone had broken into my car, stole my GPS and MP3 player. FML

Today, my boyfriend of 7 years broke up with me in a text message. Then I found out from a mutual friend that he "came out" and told everyone at our school that he is gay. He has known he was gay for years and he was just using me as a cover up. What a great way to start my senior year. FML

Today, I received a rejection letter from a company I interviewed with three weeks ago. They didn't mention giving my $200 portfolio back. Guess I'll keep using my 4-year degree to wait tables. FML

Today, I got a paper back that was given a zero for suspected plagiarism. Everything I wrote was my own thought and analysis. My instructor basically thinks my paper is smarter than I am. He won't listen, even when I explain my thought processes throughout the piece. FML
Today, I found out that I'm 8 weeks pregnant. Tomorrow, I'm supposed to be leaving for Paris with my college abstinence group for a year. FML

Today, I was trying to write an essay for school while sleep deprived. After getting 7 pages into it, I crashed face-first onto the keyboard and slept for 20 minutes. When I woke up, my essay was nothing more than a blank document. My face had been pressing the Backspace button the entire time. FML

Today, I asked my father for some help paying my college tuition. He told me he'd help me after I become more accredited than he is. My father has 2 PHDs. I'm studying to be an elementary school teacher. FML

Today, I was texting while making dinner. I went to pour the noodles into the boiling water and I dropped my phone in. Not thinking, I went to retreive it from the water. I now have a completely useless phone and a useless hand. FML

Today, I finally filed the divorce papers I was putting off for weeks. This is my third divorce. After my first husband cheated on me, and my second husband and I learned we had VERY different views, now my third husband is cheating on me with his fiancee. I'm a marriage counselor. FML

Today, I was reading my students' Halloween stories I made them write for my creative writing class in high school. One of my students wrote about attacking me. She got my street address perfect and everything. FML

Today, I returned home for the first time in a year, and found my entire computer missing. I asked my grandma about this, and she told me that she threw "the TV" away because it "no longer responded to the remote control." FML

Today, I got bailed out of jail. I was there because I saw a girl being hit by her boyfriend. I rushed over to help only to have her hit me repeatedly. The cops came and she blamed her bruises on me. The boyfriend corroborated her story. FML

Today, I learned I have over $10,000 in debt, despite never owning a credit card. Apparently, my ex-roommate had been replying to the credit card offers I was receiving in the mail. That also explains my missing driver's license a few months back. FML

Today, I went for a run in a new pair of shoes that left me with huge blisters. As I finished cleaning them up so they could heal, I limped to my bed to take a nap. I was woken by the fire alarm. My building was having a drill and we couldn't use the elevators. I live on the 9th floor. FML

my 9/11 story

Ok so I don’t know exactly how long and rambling this is going to be but with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 coming up I felt I had to finally write, in depth, about what that day did to me and how it changed my life forever. I don’t mean to be over-dramatic but in some sense part of me died that day (not literally, I didn’t know anyone that was killed, thank God) and my life has never been the same since. If you had known me before September 11th 2001 and met me now, you probably would be hard pressed to believe I am the same person. Let me start from the beginning, the day that changed me, and the world, forever.
I remember it as a bright sunny day, I had just quit being on my 9th grade soccer team because I was bitter about not getting the playing time I felt I deserved and I was still kind of reeling from a really embaressing game that the Vikings played on that previous Sunday, it was the first game I had attended in person since the 1998 season and we lost to the Carolina Panthers (it would be their only win that season). I remember my dad dropping me off, I was loving school at the time. I was just into my third week of high school and was enjoying not having to wear a uniform every freaking day, the freedom (and ok the way the girls dressed too) was awesome. I went to my first period class, Advanced Spanish I, and went to homeroom where I waited for the morning announcements. Keep in mind this was about 8:50am CST so at this point both planes had already hit the towers and I was totally clueless then. I still had some innocence left in me. The announcement came across the speakers that we were all dismissed to the cafeteria to watch what was going on. In retrospect it was amazing because my dad said that as he was leaving the parking lot where he dropped me off for school he heard about the first tower being hit. That minute changed my morning.
Anyway I remember that this past summer there was this show I was watching on CNN that said something about this terrorist group and how they might want to use planes to attack the USA. Apparently it had been plotted before but the plans were broken up. The first words out of my mouth after I saw this were, “I have three words for this, Osama Bin Laden” people looked at me weird but even back then I didn’t really care. At about 9:07am CST the bell rung for us to go to our next class. Right as we were leaving I thought I saw part of one tower collapsed but when I got to the next class I found out it had gone down completely. My IPS (Intro to Physical Science) teacher tried to get us to pay attention to our lesson plan, we were persistent about leaving the TV on so we agreed to leave it on but leave it on mute. I tried to look and concentrate on the problems but it was no use. A little while later, maybe about 15 minutes, I hear one of my classmates gasp. I look up and see the second tower in the middle of collapsing. I turned and saw the look of my classmates face who was sitting next to me and I cannot describe the look, but it will be burned into my memory until the day I die. Then reports come in about the Pentagon being hit and a plane and a plane crash somewhere in Pennslyvania. The next thing I remember was lunch and us discussing where they would hit next. I was convinced it wasn’t over but thank God it was. But obviously the damage was already done.
The rest of the day I was numb, hell I was numb for weeks even months. I remember coming home and not being sad but being pissed. I wanted to know who did this and I wanted to go and kill them myself (this would be important to me later on, but I’ll get to that later). I think I did some homework that night but I can’t be sure. Like I said I was numb. Of course the baseball games were going to be postponed that night but what came the next day I was really unprepared for. All football games that weekend, college and pro, were to be cancelled and all baseball games until at least Thursday (I believe they didn’t start playing until next Monday but I cannot remember exactly). This may not seem like a big deal to you or the average person but it was life-altering, literally, for me. I loved sports (I still do, but have dialed it back a lot) and little else. Sports was everything in my life I really had literally no other interests at that point in my life (except girls, like any other healthy 15 year old male). Watching and playing sports, that was pretty much it for me K-8 and for 3 weeks into 9th grade. Now I had nothing to watch. The Sports Illustrated the week after aptly put it ‘the week that sports stood still’. I later found out in some e-mails my mom wrote to her friend in NYC that she was getting pretty concerned about me in the weeks after but had no idea what to do. I was all consumed in this tragedy, I didn’t know what else to do, I felt I had to. Like it was my duty as an American to watch and learn as much as I could about this so I would know what to expect in the coming weeks and months as this was sure to happen again. We were going to become like Israel, expecting terrorist attacks a few times a year.
As I sit here and write this on September 1, 2011, if you had told me on September 12th 2001 that nearly 10 years to the day after the attacks that we would not have suffered another major terrorist attack on US soil I would have said you are not only nuts, but probably should be locked up. This was going to happen again (by the way I still believe that, it is only a matter of time, we can’t be perfect forever) and soon and frequently. In this aspect I had a very odd reaction to this, I found every book I could find about nuclear and bio terrorism and started reading them. Since this was the next logical step I figured I better read about the possibilities and prepare. By early 2002 I was what you could call an amateur “expert” on anything terror related. This also led to another inevitability, my venture into politics.
I remember bits and pieces about politics pre-9/11 mostly the Monica Lewinski scandel and the 2000 election mess. Other than that I didn’t give a damn about politics. Now I started to follow them. My loyalties still didn’t lie anywhere yet but this reaction to the tragedy and hearing what leaders from both parties said helped me decide. One side was saying that we needed to understand our new enemies and figure out why they hate us. This pissed me off to no end hearing that. We did not need to understand and figure out our enemies, they are our enemies, we need to go, find, and eliminate them. Needless to say I did become a fan of W after this. I know it sounds lame but he was a big part of helping me heal. I shutter to think about what President Gore would have done. But that’s alternate history and never happened.
As the date draws nearer I still haven’t recovered and I never will. I look at all the kids out there today, especially those under 10 and feel sorry for them. I had the honor of spending most of my years growing up in a decade of peace and prosperity, something that had not happened in this country since the 1920’s. From the fall of the USSR (1991) to 9/11 there were very little in actual attacks on the United States. It seems that may be part of what caused 9/11, we have become victims of our own success and I fear that it may be happening again. It is only a matter of time before terrorists have a major successful attack that could be much worse. Hopefully we won’t allow that to happen but we have been able to prevent attacks, unlike say Spain, Bali, London, so far so that gives me hope.
It seems that this will be a never-ending battle. What a lot of people in this country don’t understand is that a significant number of people in this world are indoctrinated into hating Jews, Americans, and Christians and no amount of talking to them will convince them otherwise. They need to be killed because you cannot talk any sense into these people and until these people are gone we, as a nation, remain at risk.
Finally as I write the close of this on September 11, 2011, I am sitting here watching the History Channel play a special that is literally just home movies of people capturing that day first hand. It is so much more dramatic and personal than the news accounts of that day because these are just everyday people reacting to the tragedy as it unfolded around them. Let us never forget those who were lost or the horror of that day. Anytime you think our overseas involvement isn’t worth it just watch a video of people jumping from either tower. That is why we are over there. We didn’t start this (I don’t care what people say) but we will end it. And if people think we are ‘islamophobic’ now just wait until the next attack. We are a tolerant people but remember what happened after Pearl Harbor? The internment camps? It could happen again. You piss us off enough and you will feel the wrath of the most powerful country in the world.

Crazy eyes, bipolar-alcoholic nutjob Mark Dayton (I think he might also be manic, believe me I would know, but thats another story) wants to shutdown the government. There is a devestating article in the star-trib op-ed section today that proves this.
First I'm going to show a picture of our disturbed governor...

Gov. Mark Dayton released his plan for a state government shutdown earlier this week, outlining the staff and services that his administration considers essential. The plan was filed in Ramsey County District Court, since the courts will play a major role in any shutdown planning.

While the governor's office says it considers all government services to be essential at some level, the shutdown plan includes only those "critical services to protect the lives and safety of Minnesotans."

The administration also emphasizes that the courts will ultimately determine which services are "critical." But the shutdown recommendations offer a telling glimpse of this administration's priorities and motives.

Dayton's plan is appalling -- not only for the services it deems "critical" but, more important, for those it does not. For example, the governor plans to stop all aid payments to schools.

Additionally, health care providers who serve Minnesotans on medical assistance will also go without payment. And at a legislative hearing this week, an administration official acknowledged that bridge assessments also did not make Dayton's list, apparently failing to meet the governor's "critical service" standard.

The clear strategy: Make any government shutdown hurt as much as possible, as quickly as possible, and as broadly as possible in order to coerce legislators into accepting Dayton's tax hike proposal.

Of course, the Dayton administration would never admit that. Instead, it insists that the state Constitution leaves it no choice but to stop paying health care providers and nursing homes, to stop aid payments to schools, and to take other devastating measures.

According to Rep. Ryan Winkler, a leading DFL voice on all things shutdown, it would be unconstitutional for the state to spend money on virtually anything if a budget deal is not reached by July 1. Winkler says "any spending without appropriation by law is not constitutional."

The Dayton administration has taken a similar stance.

(Of course, another problem with this argument is the fact that the Legislature passed a balanced budget that would have made appropriations for all state services had Dayton not vetoed it.)

Dayton is hiding behind the state's courts and Constitution to justify a cynical and draconian plan motivated more by politics than principle. For evidence, contrast Dayton's shutdown plan with those that preceded it.

Contingency planning for a government shutdown is nothing new to this state. Gov. Tim Pawlenty developed one prior to the state's 10-day partial shutdown in 2005, and Gov. Jesse Ventura planned for a shutdown that was ultimately averted in 2001.

A comparison of the plans is telling. Dayton has deemed as "critical" not only his media and communications staff, but also staff at his official residence. Among those employed at the governor's mansion are Dayton's chef and gardener.

In 2001, by comparison, Ventura planned to all but shutter the mansion. Aid payments to schools? They were included in the Ventura and Pawlenty plans.

Bridge assessments? They were included in the Ventura and Pawlenty plans. Health care? Again, the Dayton administration is alone in its recommendation to stop paying those who provide care for vulnerable Minnesotans.

Dayton's omissions are especially glaring in light of some of the services included in his plan. The state's dentistry board would continue to operate under a Dayton shutdown. Maintenance at Giant's Ridge resort would also continue.

And while Dayton does not plan to pay those who provide health care for vulnerable Minnesotans, he does plan to pay those who care for the state's bison herd.

Dayton's shutdown plans may soon be a moot point. Legislative leaders offered a new proposal to the governor Thursday, offering to remove more than $200 million in tax relief from their budget if Dayton agrees to drop his demand for a tax hike.

Perhaps the two sides are finally approaching a final agreement on how to operate this state for the next two years. Maybe on July 1, instead of preparing for a devastating shutdown, Minnesotans will be planning a relaxing July 4 weekend.

For the sake of the many Minnesotans who would suffer most under a government shutdown, let's hope so.

There is a thing going around called "it gets better" to encourage gay teens from other gays that life gets better. But why limit it to that? My life was hell from 11-15 and it did get better and continues to but I'm not gay, never have been. So where is the heterosexual teen to turn to? Well John Cheese of Cracked.com puts it into better terms than I ever could.

In the last year you've probably heard "It gets better" used as a motto to encourage gay teens who've been the victims of bullying. This is not a rebuttal of that, because I am not an asshole. What I do want to do is expand that message to everyone that age, whether you have a bully problem or not.
I figure it's time, as I tend to write about dark and often brutally depressing subjects, like how I was a smoldering drunk for over half of my life and how much my parents sucked at being parents. But I do it for a reason. I figure there are a lot of people in the same situation who feel like they're alone. That's always the worst part about having a shitty life in your teens or 20s, feeling like everyone else in the world has it figured out but you.
So, as a man with a truly shitty past, let me say that it's not just a slogan. It does get better. Specifically ...

#5.The Money Situation Will Improve (Even if it Doesn't)

I'm not saying you'll be rich when you grow up. I'm saying it's really not about money. It's about freedom.
My girlfriend and I recently broke into the middle class after years of living one paycheck away from homelessness. And when I say "years" I mean all the years from age 15 to age 36. It was never easy, and often was the emotional equivalent of being on the receiving end of a never-ending gang fuck by a herd of Flavor Flavs.

But even at the lowest point of that bottomless pit of gold-plated testicles and giant clock necklaces, I wouldn't have traded it for a chance to be 15-years-old again. Why? Because at this stage of your life, you finally have some control over the situation. And when we talk about things getting better, this is at the heart of it.
As a kid, you just have to sit back and take it, not fully understanding why you're living the way you are. You're dependent on your parents' decisions and actions, whether they lead to bankruptcy or a new swimming pool. A lot of that pressure you're feeling in your teens and 20s is really just powerlessness. You feel like instead of driving the car, you're tied up in the trunk.
When you get out on your own, your financial future is yours, and you can steer that bastard where you want it to go. It's not easy, but even when it's hard there is something liberating about the fact that even if you crash our proverbial car through the front window of a liquor store, it was your decision.
And just to make sure you didn't skip over the "it's not easy" part: If you think "it gets better" means you can sit back and wait for a naked genie to fart cash into your living room, it will not. "It gets better" doesn't mean life lets up, it means you no longer have to submit to it. Not like when you're a kid, when your parents can divorce without your consent or make you change schools or make you get a stupid haircut. When you're an adult, you can get pissed and swing back.
Please, don't wait as long as I did to learn that lesson. My entire adolescent life was spent in poverty because my parents gave up and just accepted that life was a spiked enema, and they just had to bend over and take it. They made no effort to improve their situation, and so that's the lesson my siblings and I took with us when we got out on our own. "There is no escaping your financial fate."
I didn't push back until I was forced to. After 14 years of working an incredibly insufficient, shitty job, my back finally said, "Fuck this," and I was physically unable to do it anymore. I had nothing to go to. No backup plan. No savings. No family to turn to. And then I realized that I did in fact have skills that people would pay me to perform.When I wasn't writing, I was putting in applications all over town. In the next town. In towns 30 minutes away. I applied to places online. When there was no gas in the truck, I walked to put in more applications. I swung harder. There are some days that I write for 16 straight hours, knowing that everything I just typed will be deleted and replaced with a completely different idea, or rejected outright. And that's OK because the success or failure is mine, not somebody else's. You can't put a price on that.
#4.You Will Find Someone

There's a human trait that can sometimes be incredibly beneficial to growth, while at the same time devastating to morale. And that's the desire to have something right fucking here, right goddamn now. If you point that urgency toward something like getting a better job or a promotion, it can be a powerful tool. That urgency is what made all human civilization possible.
It's not so hot when you're lonely and want a companion -- especially when you're young and watching all of your friends joining the boob buffet and you're still alone every weekend. I've seen over and over in my life, people (including myself) who sink into depression because they don't feel that they're ever going to find love. So they look, and look, and look. Depending on who you are, you'll try bars, grocery stores, libraries, online dating services, friends of your mother. Then you latch onto the very first person who pays you any attention, even if they're not right for you. Because, shit, what if nobody else ever comes along?
Then months or years later, you find yourself lonely again, or worse: in a catastrophically bad relationship that you're afraid to leave. "It's better to be in this shitty hookup than to be alone," you'll tell yourself, knowing on some level that you're full of shit. Eventually you get to the point where you blame yourself. "I'm too fat. Nobody will ever love me." "I have this third arm growing out of my forehead. I have no chance." What is hard to realize from that state of mind is that it's the desperation itself that's screwing you. If you're trying too hard, people can smell that a mile away. That in itself is ass-repellant.
I'm not sure I've ever met someone who went their whole life without a "significant other." But I've met plenty of people whose dates took an abrupt halt when they let slip with, "God, before you came along, I was just close to putting a gun to my temple and- oh, the steak is finally here!"
You have to relax. It turns out some lessons taught by romantic comedies aren't full of shit: Concentrate on taking care of yourself first, because 90 percent of a relationship's success is a matter of maturing into the type of person other people want to be around.
If you're young (in high school or college) you don't even know who you are yet. Those early, failed relationships, or lack of a relationship, do not doom your prospects for romance for the rest of your life. Hell, at this point it wouldn't even matter if you met the love of your life -- you haven't even fully become the person who will eventually have something to offer them. Getting down about success with romance at this point is like giving up on a team in the preseason. In your early 20s, your starting players haven't even come off the bench yet.
But this still applies later in life -- I got divorced after a 10 year marriage, and found myself right back in that same, desperate place, scared of being alone. I didn't find anyone until I decided to stop worrying about that and start worrying about making less of a mess of my life. It makes sense, looking back -- when you're in that desperation mode, you put up fronts, and try to be the person you think the guy or girl wants. And that may work for one night, but when you both settle down, that outer "first impression" shell disappears, and you turn into you. Suddenly, you're "not the person I knew when we first met." And they're right. Because the person they met wasn't you.
If you get more comfortable with yourself, you stop trying so hard, you get more relaxed and don't feel like you have to work so hard to hide your true self. You don't stop looking for someone, I don't mean that; you just stop hating yourself so hard for not finding them. I know it sounds like a Catch-22, but it's the lack of self-hatred that will make you attractive.

#3.High School is NOT the Best Years of Your Life

I'm not going to sugar coat this: Adults tell you that high school is the best time you'll ever have because they've forgotten what it was like. They just remember the part where they didn't have to worry about bills, and their hindsight becomes so focused and narrow that it couldn't see the period at the end of this sentence.
The truth is, for many if not most of us, high school is one of the most difficult times you'll ever live through. At that age, you're expected to act like an adult while gaining none of the benefits of adulthood. You are criticized for virtually everything you do by just about every adult in your social and family circle. You're expected to start holding up responsibilities, but under their rules.
Everything I said above about how you need to be yourself and grow into a fully formed human being before your life can really start? Those teen years don't make it easy. If you look at porn, you have to hide it. If you hang out with friends that your parents don't approve of, you have to cover it up. When you go out, you have to be home by their set schedule. The house is decorated their way. You eat what they cook. You dress to their standards. You lose every argument because "You're only 16, you don't know what you're talking about yet."
And the entire time you're dealing with all of this stress, your body is fucking with you from the inside out, blasting you with hormones and chemicals that you've never experienced in your entire life until right now. You're sexually awkward because you don't have much, if any, experience. If you're not ready for sex, you're made to feel like an outcast, and you're instantly ostracized from certain social groups. It is terrifyingly hard. Some people don't make it through. You fucking will. Why?
In just a few years, you'll be on your own. Maybe you'll go to college or maybe you'll start work right away. Either way, you will, for the first time in your life, be the master of your own domain. You'll come home from a hard day's work and throw your pants on the floor because they're your pants. It's your floor. Your rules. And as you spend the rest of your pantsless day, relaxing on your self-made pantscarpet, there's not a goddamn thing anyone can do about it.
Why? Because...

#2.Until You're On Your Own, You Don't Know What Freedom Is

First of all, don't look at your parents boring lives and assume that being an adult means living according to their template. No, you don't have to ditch the video games and take up a "grown up" hobby like golf if you don't feel like it. See, once you're an adult, you get to decide.
Want to stay up until 4 a.m. on a Wednesday? Go for it. Want to eat straight whipped cream right out of the container? Have at it. Adulthood is being able to get into your car at 2 a.m. and just drive for no reason at all. It's growing past being dragged to Mom's church every Sunday and being able to decide for yourself what you want to believe. It's eating pie for supper. It's choosing your own friends and buying your own clothes. It's sitting three feet from the TV screen, just because you fucking can. It's watching a movie for no other reason than it has a lesbian sex scene with Natalie Portman.
That's not to say that there are no repercussions for doing those things, but by God this is your life now, and you have the right to learn those lessons in any way you choose. You own those repercussions. They're yours, no one can take them from you.
For instance, almost everyone I've ever met -- and I've lived in six major cities in the United States -- complains that they "have to get out of this shitty town." I heard it in small-town Illinois, I heard it in Los Angeles, I heard it in Minneapolis. There are like two dozen hit rock songs from the 80s on that subject. Well, as an adult, you have every right and every opportunity to make that happen. You might fuck it up and wind up living in your car, but it was your doing. That freedom is the most powerful tool you'll ever own, and it's exactly what enables you to continue growing. And you will grow.
Yes, you'll have problems. But they'll be your problems. And besides, what would you do without them? The problems are what get you out of bed in the morning. They're what makes succeeding at things such a goddamned rush. You can't be a dragon slayer without dragons.
People talk about a "real world" after graduation, as if that's when the "real" stress starts. And in some ways, they're right. But nothing takes away from the feeling of being at the wheel, doing things on your own terms. Besides, there's something you should know about the "real world" ...

#1.The World isn't as Bad as You Think

When you're a kid, your parents shelter you from the worst of what's really going on in the world. As you get older, your worldview changes and expands. You start to think outside of your own town and social circle. You'll see a metric fuckload of bad news. Violence, government scandals, wars over seemingly petty bullshit. At some point (maybe later in high school but most seem to save it for the college years) you'll get cynical. "Why should I live in this world when it's so shitty?" Or later, "How can I bring a child into this living hell?"
We forget that what is happening now is the opposite of what your parents did. They sheltered you from bad news, but the news media shelters you from good news. They literally filter it out; among all of this horrible information coming out of the nightly news, there is so much good that goes unreported because it doesn't get the same ratings.
But as for the bad shit, there has to come a point where you realize the same thing I've touched on over and over again in this article: As an adult, you are now part of the world and you do have some power to change it. As a kid, you didn't have the power to change shit.
The reason you need to live in a world with all of this shitty news is because that world needs you to help fix it. The reason you can bring a child into this life is because when you pass on your morals and beliefs to them, that's one more soldier on the field to fight for the good side.
Chances are you're not going to show up and disarm a bomb at the last second on a plane filled with a hundred innocent people. But you can absolutely donate some trivial amount of money to make sure some farmer in some oppressed country can get medicine to his family so that they can help him harvest the crops that will in turn feed entire villages.
Life gets better because you're going to make it better. Because you'll have the power and the freedom to make it better.
It's incredibly difficult for a teenager in the throes of angst or a college kid knee-deep in debt and stress to see any of that. Depression is like that. It shrinks your view of the world, it chokes off the horizon. You feel like you're being tea-bagged by life -- its hairy ass cheeks planted firmly over your eyes so you can't see anything else.
Don't mistake those ass cheeks for the whole world. The world is actually out there, beyond that ass, and time and effort will make that clear. You have to survive it first though. I promise you, it gets better.

Dayton Wants a shutdown...

Derek's post here indicates the possibility of a plan on part of the DFL and Dayton to shut down our state government and blame the Republicans. Yesterday, I received another letter supporting the same idea - in other words, no "negotiation" with the DFL will work.

We just received fairly reliable information from the Administration that there is a good chance that the Governor's shutdown plan will include terminating payments to both health plans and health care providers for all government programs effective July 1. We believe that the decision may be that, even though eligibility for programs will continue, providers and health plans will not be paid for providing their services and coverage. The intent appears to be to have an immediate, strong impact of the shutdown to create the greatest possible pain and resulting pressure on the Legislature to resolve the dispute. [A planned attack on our legislators and the still-working people of MN - that is, Dayton will only want a tax increase - those who believe this is only on the rich will have a very pricey awakening]

Many of you would be seriously, if not fatally, damaged by an extended period of time with no payments under government programs. For this reason, we are planning to work with other health care organizations to try to plan and launch an aggressive media, grassroots and lobbying campaign directed toward legislators who are swing votes in overcoming the deadlock and to maintain as much health care program funding as possible. [So pressure the legislature to spend money we don't have; let Dayton increase taxes on MN; where will this money come from?]

We are organizing a meeting for next week and will send you an invitation and more details as soon as we can. We are also asking for data from DHS and other sources to quantify the impact of the vetoed HHS bill by county and hope to be able to share the data at the meeting so that advocacy efforts can be supported by data on the impact on each legislator's district.

If you are aware of any data or analysis on the impact of the HHS bill, please forward it to me. Also, if you have seen some effective communications messages and personal stories that you think are especially effective, please share them with me, too.

This past Monday, June 6, I was told Governor Dayton was a "no-show" at a scheduled state meeting to discuss the budget with the MN Senate. Yesterday, after hearing a panel of Republican representatives, we were told that Governor Dayton has not given his commissioners any negotiating power. They go to hearings in St. Paul but can't day or do anything.

Why does it appear that the "party of the people" is out destroy business, tax the daylights out of everyone else and hurt the very people they claim they want to help? IMO, control, control, control but to what end?

Support your legislators - "Hold the line!"

Write to your local paper - Dayton and his people are now playing with people's lives. There is enough money to keep these places going - Dayton simply wants more.

Earthquake "predicted" for tomorrow in Italy...

Normally stuff like this is just laughed off but I am intrigued by this. There was this seismologist in Italy that predicted that Italy would be hit by a 'Big One' on May 11, 2011. The odd thing about the prediction is he made it 96 YEARS AGO. Unusual yes but I'd thought I'd post it on the (very) outside chance this actually happens. From the Telegraph...

The panic has been fanned by Facebook, Twitter and text messages around a prediction by Raffaele Bendani, a seismologist who forecast in 1915 that a "big one" would hit Rome on Wednesday.
He is also said to have predicted other earthquakes which hit Italy during the last hundred years before his death in 1979.
Massimo La Rocca, headmaster of a school in the Trastevere district, said: "We have had quite a few parents calling in and saying they will not be sending their children in."I've told them the school will remain open and there is nothing to be scared about but they are adamant – although this is not a justifiable absence for a pupil."
A barman named Massimo said: "People have been talking about this for the last week. I know dozens who are taking the day off – I'm going to sleep in the camper van with the wife to be on the safe side."
Bendandi believed movement of plates and therefore earthquakes were the result of the combined movements of the planets, the moon and the sun and perfectly predictable.
In 1923 he predicted a quake would hit central Italy on January 2 the following year – he was wrong by two days.
For his work Bendandi was even given a knighthood by Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini – and ordered not to make any more predictions on pain of exile as officials feared he would create immense panic.
However seismologists have been quick to step in and say his theories are without any scientific proof and despite his claims earthquakes are completely unpredictable.
Seismologist Alessandro Amato, who works at the Italy's National Geophysical and Volcanology Institute, said:"There is absolutely no evidence to say that an earthquake will hit Rome on 11th May and we have told that to the hundreds of people who have called.
"There is a possibility that on the day in question the country as a whole will have an average of 30 or so tremors but that is perfectly normal and the figure we expect.
"It is not scientifically possible to predict the exact date that an earthquake will occur and that's why we are holding these open days at the Institute to better inform people."
An estimated 20 million people live at risk from earthquakes in Italy, which is also home to some of the most active volcanoes in Europe.
The Eurasian and African plates meet along a line which runs through North Africa and crosses the Mediterranean near south Italy and Greece. As a result, two main fault lines cut across the Italian peninsula. Memories are still vivid of an earthquake in the central Italian city of L'Aquilam which lies to the north of Rome, in 2009, which killed 300 people.

Why Americans Choose Opportunity Over "Fairness"

President Obama’s criticisms of the Republican budget proposal put forward by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin center on one main objection: It is unfair.

The Ryan plan is based on three premises. First, our economy is headed for a predictable disaster because of the ruinous levels of government spending. (Standard & Poors’ decision this week to downgrade its outlook for U.S. debt only confirms this worry.) Second, we already have one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, and we can’t load more income taxes onto entrepreneurs without expecting collateral harm to jobs and economic growth. Third, therefore, we must cut spending and reform entitlements, and this would necessarily affect the nearly 70 percent of Americans who take more from the government than they pay in taxes.

The president isn’t buying it. “There’s nothing serious about a plan that claims to reduce the deficit by spending a trillion dollars on tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires,” he said in a speech on April 13. Knowing that some polls show support for tax increases, he also complained that, over the past decade, “the top 1 percent saw their income rise by an average of more than a quarter of a million dollars each. And that’s who needs to pay less taxes?” And in his town hall meeting Wednesday, he called for a tax code that is “fair and simple,” proposed spending cuts that are “fair” and ask for shared responsibility, and concluded that he wants to “live in a society that’s fair.”

While conservatives have criticized the economic principles and class-baiting cadences of Obama’s budget rhetoric, no one has answered his fundamental charge that the Ryan plan is unfair. Conservatives have long stayed away from fairness debates, preferring to build unemotional arguments on the right angles of economic efficiency. This is a lost opportunity. Advocates for limited government can win the fairness argument in a walk.

For years, economists have conducted experiments to study attitudes about economic fairness. One such experiment is the “ultimatum game.” Two strangers are asked to split $10. One is given the $10 and instructed to choose how much to offer the other. Say you and I are the players, and I offer you $3, meaning I would keep $7 for myself. If you accept my offer, we both keep the respective amounts. If you reject it, we both leave empty-handed.

Economic theory predicts that you should accept any positive offer — even one penny — because it’s better than nothing. But, of course, that’s wrong. If the offer seems too unfair, you’ll walk away out of spite and punish me for my selfishness. In the United States, games like this have an average offer of about $4, and offers are accepted about 85 percent of the time.

Note that merit is not part of the experiment; nobody earned the $10. When we bring merit into the mix, the results change. Another experiment shows this by asking subjects to imagine they are lying on a hot beach, craving a cold beer. Would they be willing to pay more, less or the same for their favorite beer if it were purchased from an upscale resort hotel versus from a run-down grocery store?

It turns out that people are willing to pay up to 77 percent more to buy the beer from the fine hotel. A reasonable interpretation is that if you have high prices because you run a nicer business with higher costs, people believe it is fair for you to charge them more than if you have low costs and worse service. An additional inference is that it would seem unfair to force the hotel to lower its prices just because the grocery store charges less.

In general, when resources are perceived as unearned, people think it fair that they be split up somewhat evenly. But when merit is involved, people believe it is fair to reward it with more money. This exemplifies the two most common definitions of economic “fairness” in public policy. The $10 game involves redistributive fairness; the beach-beer experiment reveals meritocratic fairness.

Public opinion studies show that Americans tend to prefer beer on the beach. In 2006, the World Values Survey asked a large sample of Americans to imagine two secretaries with the same job but one earning considerably more. However, the higher-paid secretary is “quicker, more efficient and more reliable.” The survey asked whether a pay difference between the two was fair. About 89 percent said the gap was fair, while about 11 percent said it was unfair.

Of course, for this example to translate into a fair economic system, both secretaries must have the opportunity to develop their skills. It’s not fair at all if the less-effective secretary couldn’t go to school and doesn’t know how to read.

And so it is in our country. If opportunity in America is a sham — if the system is rigged and some people get the breaks only for reasons of luck, birth, or discrimination — then merit is fictitious and redistribution brings greater fairness. But if America is an opportunity society — if you have the chance to work harder, get more education and innovate — then rewarding merit is fair, and it is fair for some to make more money than others.

Most Americans believe we live in an opportunity society. The General Social Survey has asked Americans since 1973 to answer whether people get ahead because of “their own hard work” or because of “lucky breaks and help from other people.” For four decades, 60 to 70 percent of Americans have said “hard work,” while never more than 16 percent have said “lucky breaks.”

It’s hardly a shock that seven in 10 Americans believe in the American dream. If you descended from immigrants, ask yourself: Why did my ancestors come here? I suspect it wasn’t to find a fairer system of forced income redistribution. It was to find a place where they could get a fair shake, where they could start their own business, and where hard work and good ideas would be rewarded.

Politicians have denied the core American belief in opportunity at their peril. In 1972, Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern delivered a campaign speech to blue-collar workers at a rubber factory near Akron, Ohio. He announced his plan to raise estate taxes to dramatically reduce inheritances and to redistribute the money to people like those assembled. He felt sure his message would resonate with his working-class audience.

Instead, he was booed.

You may be thinking that, yes, opportunity is real in America, but it’s certainly not the only thing. Luck, discrimination and birth affect life outcomes, too. In my case, I was born into a family with little money but was lucky to have parents who valued honesty, thrift and education. Others weren’t so lucky.

Good parents are one kind of luck. Studies have emerged showing that life is easier for beautiful women and tall men who don’t lose their hair. And even if you’re short, bald and unattractive, you can still game the system. We have all had lazy colleagues who have brown-nosed their way to some success, with less merit than us.

Since equality of opportunity is not universal, doesn’t this invalidate — or at least weaken — the romantic notion of meritocratic fairness? Of course not. You’re living in a dream world (or you have tenure) if you really believe merit doesn’t matter. Everyone can think of times when things went well as a direct result of hard work. We can also come up with cases in which we were punished at work or in life for laziness, incompetence, free-riding or stupidity.

And even if only a portion of the outcomes in life were due to merit, we should still gear our system to the part that is under our control. Otherwise, we have no incentive to be industrious, honest, innovative and optimistic — and there’s no reason to teach these values to our kids, either.

Most important, if we reject the ideals of opportunity and meritocratic fairness, we will end up with a system where outcomes are simply based on luck or political power — it would become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In a 2005 study published in the American Economic Review, economists at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studied 29 countries and showed that a belief in luck over merit was strongly linked to the level of taxation and spending on social programs. Furthermore, they showed that the more citizens believed in a merit-based system, the more their public policies produced such a system.

In contrast, when populations believed that outcomes are a product of luck, birth, connections, or corruption, the people demanded more distortions to the free-enterprise system and ended up with a system that only affirmed their anxieties.

When politicians argue that, for the sake of fairness, we must raise taxes on the entrepreneurial class — and make those “millionaires and billionaires” bring us a few state-subsidized beers on the beach — they are unwittingly undermining the possibility of achieving the opportunity society they regret not having.

We are not a perfect opportunity society in the United States. But if we want to approach that ideal, we must define fairness as meritocracy, embrace a system that rewards merit, and work tirelessly for true equal opportunity. The system that makes this possible, of course, is free enterprise. When I work harder or longer hours in the free-enterprise system, I am generally paid more than if I work less in the same job. Investments in my education translate into market rewards. Clever ideas usually garner more rewards than bad ones, as judged not by a politburo, but by citizens in the marketplace.

There is certainly a role for government in this system. Private markets can fail due to monopolies (which eliminate competition), externalities (such as pollution), the need for public goods (such as education, which is indispensable in an opportunity society), corruption and crime. Furthermore, most economists agree that some social safety net is appropriate in a civilized society. When the government focuses on these things, it assists the free-enterprise system.

But when a government that has overspent for years turns to tax increases instead of spending cuts simply for the sake of “fairness,” it weakens free enterprise, lowers opportunity and impoverishes us in many ways.

And that is simply unfair.

Today, I finally filed the divorce papers I was putting off for weeks. This is my third divorce. After my first husband cheated on me, and my second husband and I learned we had VERY different views, now my third husband is cheating on me with his fiancee. I'm a marriage counselor. FML

Today, I was reading my students' Halloween stories I made them write for my creative writing class in high school. One of my students wrote about attacking me. She got my street address perfect and everything. FML

Today, I returned home for the first time in a year, and found my entire computer missing. I asked my grandma about this, and she told me that she threw "the TV" away because it "no longer responded to the remote control." FML

Today, I got bailed out of jail. I was there because I saw a girl being hit by her boyfriend. I rushed over to help only to have her hit me repeatedly. The cops came and she blamed her bruises on me. The boyfriend corroborated her story. FML

Today, I learned I have over $10,000 in debt, despite never owning a credit card. Apparently, my ex-roommate had been replying to the credit card offers I was receiving in the mail. That also explains my missing driver's license a few months back. FML

Today, I went for a run in a new pair of shoes that left me with huge blisters. As I finished cleaning them up so they could heal, I limped to my bed to take a nap. I was woken by the fire alarm. My building was having a drill and we couldn't use the elevators. I live on the 9th floor. FML

Today, I was at a party where I ate bowl of disgusting snacks because I didn't want to drink on an empty stomach. I spent the next twelve hours trying to prevent the world from collapsing into millions of demonic shards, cause apparently that's what a large dose of magic mushrooms does. FML

Today, my boyfriend of six years broke up with me for a girl he's known for less than 72 hours. Why? He wanted someone pure. I lost my virginity to him five years ago. FML

Today, I wore my cool new shirt with an oriental character on it to class. The Chinese TA burst into laughter and told me the shirt read, "I am a sad, pathetic person." FML

I see a 'sack' which appeared to contain a liquid. Being the curious type, I cut open the sack, spraying said liquid over me and my desk. My teacher, after giggling, informed me that the liquid was in fact urine. I was pissed on by a dead pig. FML

Today, my girlfriend sent me a naked picture of herself and I wish she hadn't. FML

Today, I had gotten home from dropping my boyfriend off when my dad said "your phones been buzzing". I had a text saying "you're grounded," from my Dad. My Alarm saying 'Birth Control Pill' had been going off for a half hour while I was gone. FML

Today, at my sister's engagement party, my cousins thought it would be funny to get my nanna drunk. They regretted it when she told them, and everyone else at the party about her sex life and how she fakes orgasms with my grandpa. FML

When tragedy strikes home...

I have been relatively "lucky" so to speak when it come to unexpected tragedies. Like a friend dying suddenly in a car accident or losing a relative with no notice. Sadly that changed today at 6am about a block from where I live. We got a call from our neighbor at about 5am and she left a message, being half asleep I couldn't quite tell what she said but I knew it was probably bad but I just wanted to sleep for a few more hours before work. When another call came at 5:20 I knew something was very wrong. I heard my mom say that "The Robbs house is on fire" and I quickly put on some jeans and literally ran over there. I thought it was bad but I didn't realize how bad until I literally saw half a dozen fire trucks with upwards of 40 firemen out and about. I honestly thought (and hoped) I was still dreaming. That was until I felt the heat of the fire and smelled the smoke. Everyone was clamoring around and if you look at some of the video from early on in the fire I was one of those people standing there for what it matters. No one knew what was going on and then reality came up and slapped us in the face, she said she just saw our neighbors body being put into a bodybag. My mom and her friends all hugged each other and cried, it actually was really sweet and touching. Me and my mom's friends husband just kind of looked at each other but said nothing. What the hell can you say anyway. I became (and still am frankly) numb. I was close with her and that family. She was always nice to me and always asked how I was and was genuinely a nice person, not one of those fake nice edina people. I literally cannot remember a time where she didn't have a smile on her face. On a sidenote I always put her name down on job applications when they asked for recommendations of people you know just because I knew she would say something nice about me because thats just the kind of person she is/was (sorry it's still hard having to refer to her in the past tense). Why was she home by herself? No comment and lets leave it at that (I do know but am not saying, its not really important). The one amazing thing that has come out through this is not only the love and support this community has showed for them but thanks to technology there are literally hundreds of messages on the daughters' facebook pages showing love and support. If that love doesn't at least make you think there is a God out there you are one cold hearted person.
God, Cindy I don't even remember the last time I said hi to you it had been so long. Thank you so much for taking my Mom out for her birthday last week because that is the last memory she has of you and it was an amazing one. That is a priceless gift you gave her. Don't worry about Melissa, Catherine and Peter they are in great hands. I'm sure you are already watching over them and making sure they are safe. We will try to celebrate your life more than grieve about how you are gone but it will be hard. RIP Cindy, I still can't believe your gone...

As President Obama headed to Chicago Thursday afternoon to kick off the first official fundraiser of his re-election campaign, he left behind a sizable collection of dispirited Democrats. They were not relishing the chance to vote on a budget-cutting bill that had been forged without their input and that most found repugnant.
The compromise that Obama struck last week with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to keep the federal government running contained steep cuts to some of the party’s most cherished programs—nutrition for poor women and children, long-stalled transportation projects, funding for community health centers—as well as language barring the District of Columbia from using its own tax dollars to finance abortions.

Oh it gets better, apparently the Latino community is disillusioned with him as well :)
In 2008, for example, Obama promised Latino groups that he would pass comprehensive reform within a year of taking office. Here again

Today, I was falling asleep on my desk, my head on my fist. My elbow slipped off the edge of the desk and I punched myself, leaving a fist mark on my cheek. At school, people think my parents hit me. My parents think I'm getting bullied at school. No one believes the actual story. FML

Today, I had just finished writing an essay for English. I was proud of it and thought it was one of my best works. I decided to show it to my mom, who is an English major. She read it, turned to me and said, "You know, if you actually want to go to UCLA, you're going to need to actually try." FML

Today, we got our results for our final grade English paper on which I worked my butt off on, and also which I let my best-friend copy off from. I received a E- and two detentions for plagiarism. My friend got a A minus. All she said was "oh well, at least you tried your best". FML

Today, I was turned down for a job as a cashier at Best Buy. I worked like hell to get into and then graduate from one of the top Telecommunication schools in the country. I spent all my time with extracurriculars to help my resume instead of partying like my friends. I can't even be a cashier. FML

Today, I attended a focus group. Since I've been unemployed for a month now I thought the $60 would come in handy. By the time I finished someone had broken into my car, stole my GPS and MP3 player. FML

Today, my boyfriend of 7 years broke up with me in a text message. Then I found out from a mutual friend that he "came out" and told everyone at our school that he is gay. He has known he was gay for years and he was just using me as a cover up. What a great way to start my senior year. FML

Today, I received a rejection letter from a company I interviewed with three weeks ago. They didn't mention giving my $200 portfolio back. Guess I'll keep using my 4-year degree to wait tables. FML

Every now and then we have moments that change our life. Believe it or not I was a pro-choice republican up until about 3-4 years ago. Then I found out about Margaret Sanger and the true exploits of Planned Parenthood. In fact I am so moved by this that I plan on writing a book exposing them because this is a story that everyone in the country needs to know about. Here is an article from the Hill posted earlier today. It is written by a former Planned Parenthood employee.

Myths about Planned Parenthood are spreading like grassfire. Thanks to a perfect storm of events, the abortion provider is scrambling to cauterize the biggest PR hit it has ever sustained. November’s election of an overwhelmingly pro-life Congress, revelation of numerous violations by its staff and repeated calls for its defunding by social and fiscal conservatives alike have put Planned Parenthood’s lifeblood on the line.

Planned Parenthood’s bottom line is numbers. And, with abortion as its primary money-maker, that means implementing a quota. I know this is true because I worked at one of their Texas clinics for 8 years, two as the clinic director.

Though 98 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services to pregnant women are abortion, Planned Parenthood and its political allies have sworn up and down that taxpayer dollars do not to pay for abortion. But of course they do. Planned Parenthood gets one-third of its entire budget from taxpayer funding and performed more than 650,000 abortions between 2008 and 2009. An abortion is expensive. Its cost includes pay for the doctor, supporting medical staff, their health benefits packages and malpractice insurance. As clinic director, I saw how money affiliate clinics receive from several sources is combined into one pot, not set aside for specific services.

Planned Parenthood’s claim that abortions make up just 3 percent of its services is also a gimmick. That number is actually closer to 12 percent, but strategically skewed by unbundling family planning services so that each patient shows anywhere from five to 20 “visits” per appointment (i.e., 12 packs of birth control equals 12 visits) and doing the opposite with abortion visits, bundling them together so that each appointment equals one visit. The resulting difference between family planning and abortion “visits” is striking.

But that’s not the only deception Planned Parenthood is spreading.

It also claims to help reduce the number of abortions. Not only is this not what Planned Parenthood actually accomplishes, but its goal couldn’t be more opposite. As a Planned Parenthood clinic manager, I was directed to double the number of abortions our clinic performed in order to drive up revenue. In keeping, Planned Parenthood headquarters recently issued a directive mandating that all of its affiliates provide abortions by 2013.

Planned Parenthood is also spending a lot of money convincing its primary income providers – taxpayers – that its highest priority is women's health and safety. Live Action and the Expose Planned Parenthood coalition released numerous undercover videos showing clinic staff aiding and abetting alleged sex traffickers in exploiting underage girls – some as young as 14.

After initially downplaying the first video as a scam, Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey came under so much pressure that it fired the office manager in the footage. New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow quickly called for an investigation, but Planned Parenthood’s problems don’t end with firing one office manager. Later Live Action videos revealed an unbroken chain of similar problems in clinics up and down the East Coast.

Planned Parenthood has found other ways to increase revenue at the expense of women’s safety. Abortion consultations are now often done without a doctor in the room through online “telemedicine.” Abortion is a severely traumatic and potentially dangerous procedure. Even as Planned Parenthood's 2008 Employee of the Year, I saw this aggressive push toward more “efficient” telemedicine as risky.

Another nuisance the organization is seeking to do away with is reporting sex abuse of minors. It has sued to overturn a child abuse reporting law applying to minors under 14 on the grounds that it violated a girl’s “constitutional right to privacy.” Planned Parenthood called the bill unnecessary given that its medical personnel are already obliged to report such matters and that filing additional reports would only “overload” the government. Planned Parenthood doesn’t want to bother the government with protecting minors.

It also can’t be bothered to enable women to make informed decisions. Planned Parenthood has adamantly opposed laws in nearly two dozen states that require clinic staff to show a woman a sonogram before an abortion. With all the supposed health services these clinics provide, why should they fear sonograms? Because they cut down on its biggest income source.

With the Continuing Resolution battle before us, we can, at very least, stop making taxpayers perpetuate a culture that puts profit margins before women’s safety. Congress has and must seize the opportunity to stop directing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to recipients who deliberately deceive the public and violate federal law.

I joined Planned Parenthood because I wanted to help poor women with real health care needs. I still do -- that’s why I left. Planned Parenthood doesn’t care about women’s health care needs, it cares about abortion.

It’s time to defund Planned Parenthood of our tax dollars.

So I will still do my bi-weekly staples and a few posts a week but it won't be anything crazy for the next few months while I put my first draft together.

It has come to my recent attention that you are possibly planning to crash the wedding of Prince William and 'princess' Kate. I just have one question for you, are you fucking nuts? I don't pretend to know why the British still worship (or even tolerate) the royal family in the 21st century but I can tell you this much, if you screw with this wedding prepare for some nasty consequences. If there are some imports from the US doing this, remember there is no US constitution in the UK. If they arrest you, they can beat your ass and hold you, without pressing charges, for as long as they want. You could even, ahem, 'disappear' with some MI-6 or SAS agents dumping your body in the Atlantic and you are never heard from again. To a certain extent I couldn't blame them but if you want to make a statement fine but keep in mind, if you somehow 'succeed' there WILL be hell to pay.

Today, I drove three and a half hours to surprise my long distance boyfriend for our anniversary. He was out of town. Where was he? Three and a half hours away trying to surprise me. FML

Today, I was at the McDonalds drive-thru getting my morning coffee, when some guy slammed into the back of my car. I'm so happy I was holding the cup between my legs at that very moment, because now I have 2nd degree burns on my lady parts. FML

Today, while going for my daily run, a woman stopped me and said, "I think it's so great that people of your size are comfortable enough to run and show their bodies in public." FML

Today, I found out that our water tank has had a dead crow rotting in it for days. I took showers and brushed my teeth with dead crow soup. FML

Today, I finally finished my art project which was worth 50% of my quarterly grade. I came in 1st period to give it to her. When she turned to look at it, her elbow hit her coffee and spilled it all over the canvas. I got 60%. She said I would have had a 100%, except for the giant coffee stain. FML

Today, I got to work in the ER at the local hospital. A lady came in with high blood sugar. She was concerned because the same thing happened to her husband. I reassured her, telling her she'll be back with her husband in an hour or so. Her husband died four years ago from something similar. FML

Today, at work I wrote up my boyfriend (whom I've been secretly dating, because I'm his supervisor) for being $40 short on his register. Our policy is to write up anyone short over $10. He got mad and told my boss we're dating, and I was instantly fired. Then I got dumped for being a "tattle-tale". FML

Today, I had a police officer come to my house because I've been reported missing. My friends online decided to call the police because I haven't signed in for 6 days. FML

Today, I confronted my boyfriend because I suspected he had been cheating. His reply? "Took you long enough to figure it out." FML

oday, after a trip to my doctor I found out that my recent mood swings and hot flashes are the result of a hormonal imbalance that mimics the effects of menopause. I'm a 17 year old guy. FML

Today, I drove 600 miles to be with my boyfriend of two years for his uncle's funeral. He didn't want me to come because I am seven months pregnant and flying is dangerous in the third trimester. When I got there I don't know who was more suprised to see me: him, his wife, or their kids. FML

Unlike a lot of my conservative colleagues, I like James Carville. The man has serious balls, (and if you believe how he was portrayed by Billy Bob Thorton in 'Primary Colors' he enjoyed showing them off too) and has been the butt of many jokes since he predicted in a book that liberals and Democrats would enjoy a 40 year reign after Obama's sweep into office. I'd argue that the only reason his thesis didn't come true was because of the Tea Party, after 2008 I was apt to agree with that statement and boy was it depressing. It seemed we had lost the argument. Anyway here is a newzweek article he penned about his fearless prediction.

All right, maybe my timing was a little off.

I know a bit about selling books, and you need a good title—a catchy concoction with a little Cajun spice, something that will make folks stop in the aisles, turn away from the Grisham novels and the latest crazy diet fad, and pick up your masterpiece.
So when Barack Obama seemed headed for the White House and my party was riding high, I conjured up this one: 40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation.

Yeah, I know. Lots of people have had fun throwing it back at me since the book came out in the spring of 2009. My reliably Republican wife, Mary Matalin, has gotten off a couple of zingers. But I don’t believe in hedging my bets. Forty is a play on the “four more years” chant of many incumbent campaigns. I haven’t given up the thesis; still got 38 years to go. But the early returns from the precincts aren’t very good.

It’s not a whole lot of fun hanging out there with that title. Kind of like James Glassman writing Dow 36,000 just before the dotcom crash. Now don’t judge me by the cover alone. I made the argument that every growing demographic in this country—nonwhite voters, younger people—is trending Democratic. It’s a ticking time bomb for the GOP. That’s why I felt safe in saying that “Republicans have no hope of making serious inroads into Democratic advantages in 2010 or likely 2012 or 2014 and so on.” And just for kicks, I told the Republicans to get a better prescription-drug policy because “they’re gonna need a lot more Prozac.” So why did the Dems wind up depressed after losing the House? The problem is a bad economy dampened turnout among key Democratic groups in a non-presidential year. But the enthusiasm will bounce back when Obama’s on the ballot again.

Punditry is like weather forecasting; the winds can shift without warning. I remember when nobody would bet a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder that Bill Clinton would win the White House. So it’s easy to blow a big one.

Now I’m not one to hide my bad calls. When I was wrong about the 2002 elections, I dumped a garbage can on my head. When my John Kerry prediction didn’t pan out in 2004, I smashed an egg on my face. So when my old colleague George Stephanopoulos asked me on ABC what I’d do if the Republicans won Congress, I quickly changed the subject to my New Orleans Saints. They got it done in the Super Bowl.

Will I be vindicated by 2049? Given my hard-living past, I probably won’t be around to worry about it. That title will outlive me.

I someday hope to debate the man before he dies, like I said there are very few liberals out there that have my respect, he is one of them.

Today, I decided to adopt a 11 year old dog that has been in need of a home for several months. Two hours after I got him home, I discovered him dead in the backyard. FML

Today, at my school's Midnight Madness, I was selected to show my school spirit in a contest. Being drunk, I decided to hump the school mascot in front of 300 people. FML

Today, my 5 year old daughter figured out how to use the microwave, microwaving my brand new 3G iphone. It was completely wrecked. So was the microwave. FML

I got into a debate the other week that turned race related and I just wanted to address this on my blog for the record. I am a generally happy person, I love my life and where I am currently. I am employed at a great "fast food" (Jimmy Johns)
restaurant where I work 5-6 days a week. I currently am about one year short of a Bachelors of Arts degree at the U of M with a double major in political science and history but I am in no rush to get back. I want to possibly move up the corporate ladder by working my ass off, you know the old-fashioned way. I do not expect the world to hand me things on a fucking silver platter but I know being involved in politics and such that its not how MUCH you know but really WHO you know. And I know some relatively powerful people who I have built up a nice stack of IOU's for the future and I have to decide when to cash them in. Is this fair how the world works? Hell no, but I already knew that. Shit I knew that at 14 when one of my classmates asked and I quote, "My dad makes $100,000 a year, thats not that much is it?". Yeah I went to private school to get a good education but in some ways I wish I had went to a public school to get a real world education. Because the world doesn't operate the way it does at OLG or Benilde-St.Margarets. It operates like it does at Normandale Community College (which I did graduate from, I do have an AA degree) and to a lesser extent, the University of Minnesota. I have started to question the validity of a college degree and I'm not the only one, everyone should not go to college, some people aren't cut out for the work. EVERYONE though should AT LEAST go to a trade school. My upper-class friends may not know this but you know a plumber/carpenter/car mechanic and other skilled "blue-collar" jobs can earn you a lot of money. You can make very good money (and im talking like 100K, 200K and above) doing those jobs. The jobs that college "prepares" you for, 40-70K usually at most. And were running out of skilled labor jobs because my generation thinks it's "beneath" them to do those jobs. But would you rather be a lawyer making 45K a year paying of law school/college loans for 15 years or a carpenter making 80K a year right out of school? Note to my generation, the world has ENOUGH lawyers. But I digress, that was a bit of a tangent, but my point still stands that I am happy with my life and in 5-10 years hope to have a nice job, a wife, and hopefully (at least) a few kids. Thats all I need to be happy, and people don't control my happiness I do. The saying "Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you deal with it" is so true. I was bored with college so I mailed it in last semester and "quit". I'm now working a minimum wage job 25-30 hours a week and frankly I'm happier than I ever was at school. I busted my ass for a month to get a $7.25 an hour job and it was so worth it. But back to my point, studies have shown that conservatives/tea-partiers are... better informed, better educated and more successful at life, are generally happier, more generous and even better in the sack than big-government advocates, liberals, progressives and any followers of the -ism (environmentalism, feminism, activism in general)

But this pales in comparison to the main point I wanted to make, that we as conservatives are, are NOT RACIST. not only are we not racist but a whole lot less than the left. To anyone who is on the right this is no surprise, to those on the left, this has to be devastating. From SITD...

Among whites in the latest General Social Survey (2008), only 4.5% of small-government advocates express the view that “most Blacks/African-Americans have less in-born ability to learn,” compared to 12.3% of those who favor bigger government or take a middle position expressing this racist view (Figure 2). We social scientists sometimes like to express things in relative odds, especially for small percentages. Here the odds of small government whites not expressing racist views (21-to-1 odds) is three times higher than the odds of big-government whites not being racist (7-to-1 odds).

…but that we long-abused white male small-government are, empirically, the least-racist subgroup of all, by a whopping margin:

Figure 3 shows that, among whites, Republican advocates of smaller government are even less racist (1.3% believing that blacks have less in-born ability) than the rest of the general public (11.3% expressing racist views). Thus, in 2008 Republicans who believe that the government in Washington does too much have 10 times higher odds of not expressing racist views on the in-born ability question than the rest of the population (79-to-1 odds v. 7.9-to-1 odds).
How social conservatives who aren’t necessarily small-government – stereotypically southern? Yep – still half as likely to be a racist as a typical American:

In 2008, only 5.4% of white conservative Republicans expressed racist views on the in-born ability question, compared to 10.3% of the rest of the white population.

Today, I was involved in a wreck. How quickly did the police arrive at the scene? Very quickly, considering he was the one who rear-ended me at a red light. FML

Today, I found out that if you let your son install a new shower head, he won't tighten it properly. So when you turn the shower on, it will shoot out at rocket speed, hitting you in the face. Then when you grab the shower handle to prevent yourself falling backwards, you will just rip that out and hit your head again. FML

Today, I found out who the father of my sister's 4 year old son is. My husband of 7 years. FML

Today, I discovered that when you're the maid of honor giving a toast at your best friend's wedding, it's important to make sure the zipper on your dress is secured. Otherwise, your bare breasts and Hello Kitty panties could end up exposed to a wedding party of 600 people. FML

Today, I was playing with my cat and holding her upside down. She started frantically meowing, but I still continued on playing with her. Seconds later, she got explosive diarrhea everywhere, including my hair, face, shirt, and mouth. FML

Today, I cut my finger open with a spoon. After waiting for 4 hours in the emergency room, the doctor told me I was missing too much flesh to qualify for stitches. He then called 2 other doctors in to examine it. Apparently they had a contest for patient with most ridiculous injury. I won. FML

Today, I confronted my boyfriend, suspecting that he has been cheating on me during the past few months. He vehemently denied it. Then told me it would never happen again. What? FML

Today, I found my checking and savings account to both read $0.00. My parents transferred all my money to theirs because "I'm irresponsible, and not fit to handle money." I'm a 3.8 college student and have a full-time job. They are currently unemployed. FML

Today, my mom tells my sister that she is worried about her because she has a headache and feels like she might be getting a slight cold. I have had the flu for two weeks and have a 103 degree fever. I ask, "What about me?" Her response? "Stay away from your sister." FML

Ok, normally I don't do this but this was a significant death. It also made me realize something, in my life I will (most likely) witness the last Korean Vet die, Vietnam Vet die, and possibly even first Gulf War. Here is from my friend Mitch Berg who did a great article on him.

Frank Buckles – the last surviving American veteran of World War I – has rejoined the rest of his comrades. He passed away yesterday, age 110.

Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died peacefully of natural causes early Sunday at his home in Charles Town [West Virginia], biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. Buckles turned 110 on Feb. 1 and had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of World War I in Washington, D.C.

Buckled certainly had an action-packed life:

Buckles served in England and France, working mainly as a driver and a warehouse clerk. The fact he did not see combat didn’t diminish his service, he said: “Didn’t I make every effort?”

An eager student of culture and language, he used his off-duty hours to learn German, visit cathedrals, museums and tombs, and bicycle in the French countryside…

…In 1941, while on business in the Philippines, Buckles was captured by the Japanese. He spent 3½ years in prison camps.

“I was never actually looking for adventure,” Buckles once said. “It just came to me.”

I’d often wondered; what must it be like to be the last of…any group, much less a group of nearly five million?

“I knew there’d be only one (survivor) someday. I didn’t think it would be me,” he was quoted as saying in recent years.

NFL Labor Talks 101, for the average sports fan...

Ok, I will admit it up front. I am NOT a normal sports fan, I mean I've already bought 2 fantasy baseball magazines and plan to get at least one more. I cried after the 1998 NFC title game. I nearly destroyed a wall after the Lakers beat the Wolves 4-2, after the Wolves blew a 2-1 series lead. I stayed up for all the Wild games during their amazing 2003 playoff run even though I am not a hockey fan. I have won (and lost) hundreds of dollars worth of bets with my high school friends and lets just say its probably a very good thing I don't live near a sports book or know any bookies. But I digress this whole NFL mess has really peaked my interests because it combines the only 2 things in life I am truly passionate about. Politics and sports, heres the sticking points that I lifted from a Yahoo! Sports article

The biggest sticking point all along has been how to divide the league’s revenues, including what cut team owners should get up front to help cover certain costs, such as stadium construction. Under the old deal, owners received about $1 billion off the top. They entered these negotiations seeking to add another $1 billion to that.

Among the other significant topics: a rookie wage scale; the owners’ push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 while reducing the preseason by two games; and benefits for retired players.

The first part is going to really piss a lot of people off, its literally millionaires (players) arguing with billionaires (owners). But here is the point, the average NFL career is about 3.5 years and while I wasn't able to find it that actually probably means that most players will make $1 million or less in a career minus benefits. Still a lot of money but also keep this in mind, unlike in baseball, basketball, and hockey (I believe) there is no such thing as a guaranteed contract in the NFL UNLESS it is specifically stipulated in the contract, and even then there are clauses that are probably options out for the teams.
The second sticking point is a rookie wage scale. This came to ahead when Sam Bradford, last years #1 pick, signed a 6-year $78 million dollar contract before ever taking even a pre-season snap. But that wasn't what raised eyebrows, what did was the $50 million guaranteed that he got before he ever even stepped on a field. In theory he could have blown out his knee in pre-season, had it be career ending and STILL GET the $50 million. Before that the most guaranteed money ever offered in a contract was Peyton Manning in 2004 at $34.4 million, still a lot, but definitely earned... this guy does a better job coveringmega rookie deals than I can. A rookie wage scale will, and needs, to happen in order to get a new CBA done.
The 16 to 18 games schedule I don't really see happening. The NFL is brutal enough as it is, 18 games (which would require a reduction of the pre-season to 2 games) plus playoffs is too much to ask of the human body, even NFL players bodies. If this is a deal-breaker with the greedy owners (listen I'm not taking a side here, I say screw both of them) there will be a deadlock and I could see there not being a 2011 NFL season.
The benefits for retired players should be a no-brainer but for some reason it's not and that really bothers me. Jesus F'in Christ, take care of the guys that built the NFL to what it was. But hey what do I know, I'm just a diehard sports fan, don't listen to me...
I am too young to remember the player strikes back in 1982 and 1987, the NFL was different back then. Baseball and Basketball took up much more of the pie back then, but things have changed. This IS a football country now, some baseball people will debate me on that but sorry, Football is #1, and its not even close. These next 24-48 hours will determine the fate of the NFL for not only the next season but the next decade or possibly even generation. Will owners work with players or will they slam the door on them until they get what they want? Only time will tell and be careful owners, there are many powerful people in this country that will not be happy with a lockout. And these are not people whose bad side you want to get on. Hire some body guards if you lockout players, it will be an investment that you will need. (Note: I am not personally threatening them, but there are people out there, much more powerful than me, that probably will)

Litjens said she accepted the apology, but has asked the Assembly leadership to discipline Hintz.

Normally I would expect to find such a story in The Onion, not an actual online magazine.

It's the nightmare of every employee who feels undervalued and isolated at work: you could die at your desk and no one would ever notice. This actually happened to a 51-year-old employee of Los Angeles County: she passed away at her desk sometime on Friday, and wasn't discovered until a security guard found her on Saturday. She had last been seen alive at 9 AM on Friday.

The cause of death is still unknown, but investigators suspect natural causes.

In an exclusive interview with the NewsHour, Vice President Joe Biden told Jim Lehrer Thursday afternoon that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the target of anti-government demonstrations in Cairo, is someone he knows "fairly well" and does not consider to be a dictator. But the "time has come for President Mubarak to begin to move in the direction of being more responsive to some of the needs of the people out there."

The vice president was hesitant to link protests in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen as part of a unified trend, saying he didn't "see any direct relationship, other than it might be argued that what is happening in one country sparks whatever concern there is another country." He called for dialogue between demonstrators and the government.

After receiving threats and two suspicious letters Tuesday, the National Archives of Canada cancelled the screening of a controversial documentary that critiques Iran’s nuclear weapons program, a move that has organizers questioning the national library’s autonomy. The Free Thinking Film Society’s showing of Iranium prompted so many complaints — some of them from the Iranian Embassy — that staff thought it necessary to close the entire building at 396 Wellington St. in Ottawa, just steps from the Supreme Court of Canada and Parliament Hill at 4:45 p.m., said archives spokeswoman Pauline Portelance. “Once we started to receive threats from the public and threats of public protest, we deemed the risk associated with the event was a little too high,” she said.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Ottawa Police swept in with its Hazmat team to investigate two letters they said could be tied to the threats of protest the National Archives staff received.
“There were threats of protest, so they’ve cancelled the movie and these [letters] were delivered two hours ago to the mailroom,” said Sergeant Jeff Pilon. By 7 p.m., the letters were cleared and considered “not suspicious at all.”
Even still, organizers were furious to see their event barred from the National Archives, a regular venue for the “libertarian, conservative” society that regularly screens films about democracy and current affairs.
“I’m outraged that in the capital of Canada the Iranians have been able to shut down a movie,” said the group’s president Fred Litwin. “Bad enough in Tehran, but in Ottawa?”

The Archives first called to cancel on Monday afternoon, Mr. Litwin said. Staff had received complaints about the showing of Iranium and offered to help the group find another venue. When Mr. Litwin said he couldn’t afford to show the film at the Museum of Nature, as the Archives suggested, he sought the help of Heritage Minister James Moore.
“People from his office called back at 6:30 p.m. and said it was back on,” he said.
And so it wasn’t until 4 p.m. Tuesday that Mr. Litwin learned the Archives cancelled the event once and for all.

“We’ve been showing films here for past three years without a peep or a protest. We’ve never seen anything like this,” Mr. Litwin said. He vowed to re-book the screening at another venue, if he couldn’t convince the National Archives to allow him to show the film by Raphael Shore, the founder of the not-for-profit Clarion Fund, which produces documentaries about national security threats. “It has to be shown somewhere. This cannot stand.” He said he’ll even try to bring back Clare Lopez, a Middle East strategic policy and intelligence expert from Washington D.C., for the next showing. Ms. Lopez, one of 26 international law and nuclear arms analysts and academics interviewed in the movie was in Ottawa Tuesday evening to speak at the event.
“The film very plainly and clearly lays out the facts of the Iranian nuclear arms program, a program the regime denies having,” she said Tuesday evening, adding that she wasn’t surprised to hear protests about the film’s showing. Mr. Moore used his twitter account on Tuesday night to express disapointment with the screening's cancelation. "I am disappointed that Library & Archives Canada chose not to show the film tonight due to threats of violence," Mr. Moore wrote. "The Iranian Embassy will not dictate to the Government of Canada which films will or will not be shown in Canada." Officials at the Iranian Embassy could not be reached for comment. Although no one protested outside of the archives, the government agency had to take preventative measures, Ms. Portelance said. “There was a significant amount of complaints that accelerated to threats. It’s our responsibility to protect staff and clients,” she said. The Archives had been in discussions with Iranian Embassy officials regarding the screening, she said. “We did receive a formal request from the embassy to cancel the event.” The Free Thinking Film Society was the only group booked in the building Tuesday night, she added.

The only thing that is worse than censorship, is self-imposed censorship for fear of violence or attacks. That is essentially terrorism, "pull this film or else" has the same effect on society as a suicide bomber, only no one dies. As I like to do, this is from the comment section from the story...

I'm sick of what's happening to this country. It seems the right to freedom of expression is being stifled more and more in Canada (Ann Coulter speeches, Dire Straights' Money for Nothing, and now this). Canada is degenerating more and more by the day. Revolting.

Look everyone has their freaking two cents today about the nutter Jared Lee Loughner, who killed 5 people (at least count) critically injured a sitting congresswoman in Arizona and injured a handful of others. This guy is not a product of the tea party or any left wing (mainstream at least) groups. He is a lone anti-government, probably anarchist, atheist, nutter who is a few fries short of a happy meal. all you have to do is lok at his YouTube channel and you can see he isn't exactly making sense or even sane. Sorenson doesn't recall if he ever made any threats or uttered political statements but he was very disruptive, she said. He was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class, said Sorenson, a Tucson resident. Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughner's behavior stood out, Ali said. "It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about," Ali said. MySpace, YouTube and Facebook accounts maintained by Loughner suggest he has spent most of his life on the northwest side: His profile says he attended Thornydale Elementary, Tortolita Middle School, Mountain View High School. The online accounts also contain bizarre discussions of a new currency and literacy, as well as threatening and despairing messages. "WOW! I'm glad i didn't kill myself. I'll see you on National T.v.! This is foreshadow .... why doesn't anyone talk to me?.." he posted on MySpace Dec. 14.
How can you tell he's screwed up? He's still using Myspace! No I kid but in all seriousness this is no laughing matter. There will be a lot of finger pointing and name calling over the next few weeks but I will not participate in it. Why not you ask? Because I am taking a different view of this, this is the price we ultimately will and have to pay for living in a free society. People are free to do and say what they want as long as them doing so and saying things doesn't infringe on other people's rights. There are close to 350 million people (when you include illegals and people on VISAs) living in this country. There are bound to be a few crazies, most of the time they end up homeless, dead, in jail, or in some fringe group that wants to overthrow the government or something but every now and then they afflict damage on the rest of us. This is one of those cases. It happens, it sucks I know but it happens. Just be glad there were brave people (who are truly heros in my opinion) who were there to tackle him or this could have been MUCH worse.

To ring in the new year I am going to start of with music. I mean the blog is called "hard rock conservative" after all. Most of my posts for the next two weeks will be music related and mostly lists. Anyway here are my top 10 songs of 2010 (note: you will notice how they are not all rock songs)

#10 (Avenged Sevenfold)-Nightmare, good nasty metal song that is a little long on the video but still catchy nonetheless...

#9 (Papa Roach)-Kick in the Teeth, very catchy song. Came out in the summer and went unnoticed by most. I loved the beats though and it reminds me why I like this band so damn much

#8 (Taylor Swift)-Mine, okay yes I know its a country song and I'm supposed to hate everything country but I'm a sucker for Taylor's voice (and I'm still pissed about what Kanye did at the 2009 MTV music video awards but I digress) and of course, her body. But damn can this girl sing and tell a story.

#7 (Taio Cruz) Dynamite- Ok I literally know nothing about this guy but he sings/raps a catchy tune and had the (almost) hit summer song. 2nd catchiest song out there this year.

#6 (Katy Perry)-Teenage Dream, catchy sexual tune about teens doing it. Ok not the most original song concept ever but damn does Katie make it sound like it is for some reason. Note the video is borderline porn, then again it seems like most of her videos are...

#5 (Ke$ha)-We R who we R- yes the song came out back earlier this month but unlike a lot of people out there I like Ke$ha and hate Lady Gaga. Ke$ha is smart and entertaining, she nearly got a perfect score on her SAT's, and she snuck into prince's house in LA to drop off a demo tape. Like it or not she will be around for years to come.

#4 (Saving Abel)- The Sex is good, noticing a theme here? But seriously this song would normally be #1 in other years but the fact I have it at 4 proves this was a hell of a year for music. One of the most crass songs you've ever heard but there's truth to it, oh and it's pretty catchy too. Still no official music video though :/ and I have no idea why.

#3 (Ke$ha) Take it off- Another catchy late summer tune, I didn't even know it was her for the longest time. This was the song that made me realize she was no one hit wonder, she may act like Britney Spears but this bitch can sing like Christina.

#2 (Linkin Park) The Catalyst- The fact they aren't #1 on my list pains me but while they had a killer single to debut their first album in 4 frickin years it still wasn't the best song of the year. It was close but I swear it pains me to acknowledge the creds of the person/song I put above this

#1 (Katy Perry) California Gurls- Yeah, yeah I know I'm a rocker and shouldn't acknowledge pop music exists but it does. And damnitall this was a catchy tune, this is "California Dreaming" for the millenials. This wasn't just a hit summer song, this is a defining summer song that will be sung for DECADES to come, a song that only comes around once every 15-20 years. This is the new, sexual innuendo, catchy, song of summer until something knocks it off. Oh and it only has 63+ million views on YouTube... Plus you gotta love Snoop Dogg. And no this has nothing to do with the fact that I'm technically a "california boy". Well... maybe a little.
