Something to think about...

With all this Christianty/Muslim talk on my site (it's amazing how things are brought up isn't it) I thought I would throw another wrench into this lovely equation. For those of you who don't know I listen to a show called Coast to Coast AM from 12-4am every night. There was a guest on I think nearly 2 weeks ago who says he has scientific proof that we were genetically manipulated about like 150,000-200,000 years ago because some things just didn't add up (I care to not go into detail, go research it yourself if your really interested) anyway he said these "beings" are really our creators and they created the idea of God and religion to give us false hope in something that in reality doesn't exist. Needless to say I was stunned and thought about it for awhile and it made sense. What if Jesus, Mohammed, Budda, etc. were nothing more than average people glorified for the sake of brainwashing people? Before there is a firestorm against me (I know some of you are on the religious right) understand; I AM NOT saying that this is fact or that I even belive it. I am just putting it out there as a possiblity. Here's the question I have for you all; say 10-20 years in the future our government releases information that there is life on other planets and that we are in fact part alien. Every religion got it wrong, as a matter of fact they weren't even close. Could you handle it, would you refuse to accept it? Would you riot in the streets because you don't know what else to do? Would you go as far as to kill yourself because everything you believe in is proven to be a lie? Or would you go on with your life like nothing happened? I could go on, as a matter of fact after hearing this I'm not sure I'm ever going to Mass again (I'm not sure I would have anyway). I am eager to hear what everyone has to say.

Actually, you are pretty close. Jesus, Mohammed, and any other founder of any other religion were either...

1. Geniuses who understood the masses' need for an explanation of phenomena and fabricated a tale that would give the creator power and fame and yet still be credible enough for the masses to believe. I doubt very many founders had this in mind, but still, you never know.

2. Sufferers of epilespy, schizophrenia, dementia, or other pyscological disorders.

Assuming number one is false for most major religions, that leaves the second idea. Scientific analysis proves that it was very likely Jesus suffered from epilepsy. This caused his mind to trick him into beleiving he was the savior of the world. Note that he probably actually believed this and thought he was doing good by explaining this to the world. The few people he told, not yet having science availible to explain the world, believed him (the idea of a mental disorder back then would be absurd!) Many other diseases led to various mythological explainations (cyclopia and cyclops, rabies/porphyria and vampires, etc.) and babies born with disorders such as anencephaly or harlequin babies were considered "demons." Before microbiology, people believed diseases were caused by "bad air," and for the longest time, people believed they inhabited a flat Earth in the center of the universe, with the sun and other planets revolving around Earth. Even more pathetic is the fact that some people STILL believe these ideas (Flat Eath Society, for example)

Science has advanced so much that we not only have alternatives to religion, but explanations about how religions came about. However, even today, more theists exist than atheists, mainly because atheism, especially when combined with naturalism, materialism, ect., makes life esentially pointless. People not want to believe that, and therefore use religion to give meaning to life, a "false hope."

About the idea that the government announces that "every religion got it wrong," I'd be so happy. I could finally prove to my religious friends that I was right after all! They probably wouldn't believe the government anyway, but that's a whole different story. (And we might all actually be aliens after all; try searching for "panspermia" on google for more information!)

On a final note, I just find the development of religion ironic; those who founded the world's most prominent religions by claiming to be "god" were considered "saviors" back then, but today, when somebody claims that he or she is "god," he or she is sent off to the nearest mental institution.

These are just some thoughts from a naturalistic socialist. Ignore them if you wish, but you'll suffer the consequences of your actions.

Nah, I'd be quite comfortable with knowing that there are other planets with life on them. I don't see why that would be a problem with religious folks either. What if God created life on a bunch of planets? Or what if God created the universe then just let things run their course, interacting every once in awhile to give us some direction (prophets and such)?
